I am of the opinion that the purpose of tutoring is to learn what could not have been learned through private study or possibly in the classroom. We will always need schools and tutoring exists to provide a complementary element to a student’s education at school. Not everyone learns best in the classroom environment and tutoring can do much to reveal the untapped potential of a child. A student cannot hide in a tutorial and can be guided on the correct methods of learning in a way that is almost impossible in the classroom. I often ask my students the following question, ‘Do you think that you know more and write better now than you did three months ago?’ The emphatically positive tone of their response reveals their true views.
